The Nose of a Wine
A Wines Nose
The nose of a wine, often called the flower or bouquet, is the aroma's or fragrances your nose perceived from a glass of wine. Wine experts will tell you that every glass of wine should contain 20 or more distinct fragrances. However, as an amateur wine enthusiast you should feel a sense of accomplishment if you can identify 5-7 distinct fragrances.
When attempting to describe the aromas you perceive from a glass of wine, anyone in your presence should not criticize your description as each individual can perceive the beautiful nose of a wine differently. So, just because you smell raspberries, cedar, and a natural earthy overtone while your company is smelling cassis, leather, and chocolate; doesn;t make either of you wrong. You can both smell different aromas, enjoy the discussion of your aromas, and agree or agree to disagree on your descriptions; eitherway, enjoy the experience and the hard work the winemaker put into the effort you are experiencing.
Some of the more common aromas you can experience from wine include:
Rose, Violet, Amber, Leather, Cedarbox, Pine, Truffle, Mushroom, Apple, Red Currant, Grapefruit, Raspberry, Banana, Peach, Lychee, Quince, Strawberry, Fig, Butter, Hazelnut, Caramel, Liquorice, Vanilla, Pepper, Acid Sweets, Plum, Apricot, Lemon, Cinnamon, Honey, Honeysuckle, Hay, Boxwood, Chocolate, Tea, Tobaccco, Green Pepper, and cork. Some of these distinct aromas can be described more generically as earthiness, red fruit, cassis (black fruit), or sweet fruit.
If you are looking to improve your ability to smell wine, including the ability to enjoy the nose, describe the nose, and perceive the nose; experts will recommend you smell everything possible. For instance, when you visit the grocer, take time to smell the produce. Pick up the individual pieces of fruit and vegetables and take a whiff and enjoy. It will help train your nose to better pick out the beauty in the nose of a wine.
