California Wine

california wine Over the past two decade, California has become quite the powerhouse for producing wine; whether quality wines at a great price, or limited production fine collector wines - California has it all. California produces nearly all types of wines in the various wine making regions of California; however, California ia most known for Cabernet Sauvignon. California has over 480,000 acres of vineyards, 1200+ wineries, and produces 560 million gallons of wine annually. California is only exceed in wine output by Italy, France, and Spain.

Over the past two decades as California has grown in wine popularity, an interesting shift has occurred in the world wine making standards. There has been an interesting trend in wine making to make wines more like California wines. In years past, every region of winemaking in the world had distinctive characteristics for the wine produced from that region. This still holds true; however, we have seen a trend whereby many regions want to produce wine more like California wine, because California wines sell.

In years past, the Bordeaux region of France has a very distinctive wine. All wine makers in Bordeaux had their own style of winemaking and each wine tasted different; however, there was a very distinctive "Bordeaux style" to each wine. As California wines have grown in popularity, the style of California wines were very different. California wines had what is referred to as a "Fruit-Forward" style of wine making. The California wine's fruit forward style meant that the fruits of the wine were very noticable at an early age for the wine, making the wines drinkable at a very early age. Brodeaux, for years, was known as a region whereby the wines needed to set and age for years before the fruit would come out. As California wines have become more popular, more Bordeaux wine makers are attempting to duplicate the California fruit forward style thus allowing their wines to be approachable at a more early age, duplicating the style of the California winemakers. The other interesting part of this story is that we are now beginning to see many Chilean wines (wines from Chili) which are following the old Bordeaux style wines which need a bit of aging.

Ultimatly California has brought many new and exciting wines to the wine market and has driven a new style of wine making which allows wines to be drank at a much young of an age. So next time you open that bottle of Red Cabernet Sauvignon from California and smell the fruit in the nose, look at the vintage year, if it is a young wine then you are experiencing a fruit-forward wine.
